For individuals working in or around recreational water, the Certified Pool & Spa Operator® (CPO®) Certification provides the knowledge, techniques, and skills for pool and spa operations. CPO Certification is the world's leading verifiable pool and spa training credential, sought after for its unmatched results. Conveniently available in person or online, the PHTA® Certified Pool & Spa Operator® (CPO®) Certification program is also eligible for IACET Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

The CPO® certification course is designed to provide individuals with the basic knowledge, techniques, and skills of pool and spa operations.  The Certified Pool/Spa Operator® certification program has delivered more training than any other program in the pool and spa industry since 1972, resulting in more than 282,000 successful CPO® certifications in 64 countries.  Many state and local health departments accept the CPO® certification.

  • Current CPO® certification which has not expired.

COURSE OPTIONS

  • The CPO® Certification program requires participation in either a blended format that combines the online Pool Operator Primer™ and one day of the Pool Operator Fusion™ in-person class of instruction (an open book written examination is required), or a two-day in-person class.​​

Pool Operator Primer™

  • This online training program can be the first step to earning a CPO® Certification. This online curriculum follows the 18 chapters in the NSPF® Pool & Spa Operator™ Handbook, which is provided.  Pool Operator Primer™ participants must complete the Pool Operator Fusion™ within six (6) months.

Pool Operator Fusion™

  • This one-day in-person class is offered by a certified NSPF® Instructor and is an economical and convenient way to achieve the CPO® Certification. Sign-up for the second day of any two-day classroom certification course or a stand-alone one-day Pool Operator Fusion™ class. Students must present a Pool Operator Primer™ Record of Completion and pass an open book exam to obtain a CPO® Certification.​​​​​​
     

2-Day Classroom CPO® Certification Course​

  • This two-day class covers 14-16 hours of information from the NSPF® Pool & Spa Operator™ Handbook and local codes taught by a certified PHTA® Instructor. This dynamic setting offers direct interaction with an instructor and fellow students. Pass the open book exam and earn CPO® certification.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To successfully complete the CPO® course, candidates must:

  1. Attend the entire course and participate in all class sessions.

  2. Demonstrate competency in all required skills.

  3. Successfully pass final written exams with a minimum grade of 75%. If a participant fails to reach the minimum 75% on the final written exam, a retest can be administered on a separate day; additional fee applies.

CERTIFICATE ISSUED/ VALIDITY PERIOD

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certification in CPO® which is valid for 5 years.
